What is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking is the experience of hiking through dense mountain forest to find and spend time with a habituated family of wild mountain gorillas. In Rwanda, this takes place in Volcanoes National Park in the northwest of the country.
The Mountain Gorilla Permit
A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs USD $1,500 per person. This includes one hour with a gorilla family and the services of expert trackers and guides. The permit fee funds gorilla conservation and benefits local communities.
Best Time to Trek
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round in Rwanda. The dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the most comfortable trekking conditions with less mud and better visibility. However, the wet season brings lush green forests and fewer crowds.
What to Wear
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers to protect against nettles and insects. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots are essential. A light rain jacket is recommended year-round. Gloves help protect hands when gripping vegetation on steep slopes.
What to Expect on Trek Day
Treks begin at 7am at the park headquarters in Kinigi. After a briefing, you are assigned to a gorilla family group with a maximum of 8 visitors. Treks range from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day. Once found, you spend exactly one magical hour with the family.
Tips for the Best Experience
Book your permit well in advance — they sell out months ahead. Hire a porter from the local community (around $15) — it supports the community and makes the trek easier. Stay calm and quiet around the gorillas. Switch off camera sounds. Follow all guide instructions at all times.
