Best Time to Visit Rwanda for a Safari: Month-by-Month Guide 2025

Rwanda is one of Africa's most rewarding safari destinations, and the great news is that Rwanda is a year-round safari destination. Unlike many African countries where wildlife viewing is dramatically better in one season, Rwanda's mountain gorillas can be tracked every single day of the year. That said, the season you choose has a significant impact on your trekking experience, trail conditions, and the other wildlife activities you can combine with gorilla trekking.

In this month-by-month guide, we break down the best time to visit Rwanda for every major experience β€” gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Big Five game drives in Akagera National Park, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest, and relaxation on Lake Kivu.

Rwanda's Two Dry Seasons: The Best Time for Safari

Rwanda has two dry seasons that are widely considered the best times for gorilla trekking and wildlife safari:

Long Dry Season: June to September (Peak Season)

The long dry season from June to September is the most popular time to visit Rwanda. During these months:

  • Gorilla trekking trails are at their driest and most navigable
  • Akagera National Park is at its best β€” dry conditions force wildlife to congregate around waterholes, making lion, elephant, rhino, and giraffe sightings far more reliable
  • Skies are generally clear, making for stunning photography in Volcanoes National Park
  • The weather is pleasantly cool in the highlands β€” perfect trekking weather
  • This coincides with European and American summer holidays, so book permits at least 6 months ahead

July and August are the absolute peak months for Rwanda safaris. If you want the best conditions and can handle the crowds (which are still relatively small compared to East African alternatives), plan for this window. Gorilla trekking permit availability in these months is the most competitive of the year.

Short Dry Season: December to January (Best Compromise)

The short dry season from December to January is an excellent second option. Conditions are good for gorilla trekking, Akagera game drives are excellent, and the festive period makes for a memorable Rwanda Christmas or New Year safari. Permits are slightly easier to obtain than peak season, though December dates still sell out months in advance.

Rwanda's Two Rainy Seasons: Hidden Gems for Budget Travellers

Long Rainy Season: March to May (Green Season)

The long rainy season from March to May is Rwanda's least visited period. Rain typically falls in concentrated afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, meaning mornings are often clear and suitable for gorilla trekking. Key advantages of visiting Rwanda in green season:

  • Gorilla trekking permits are the same price but far easier to book at short notice
  • Lodge accommodation rates drop by 20–40%
  • Volcanoes National Park is spectacularly lush and green β€” a paradise for photographers who love dramatic, moody landscapes
  • Gorillas tend to stay at lower altitudes where food is most abundant, often making treks shorter
  • Nyungwe Forest is beautiful β€” waterfalls are at full flow and the rainforest is at its most alive

The main downside of visiting Rwanda in the rainy season is that Akagera National Park game drives are less productive. Wildlife disperses across the park when water is widely available, making predator and rhino sightings less reliable.

Short Rainy Season: October to November

October and November bring the short rains. This is Rwanda's quietest tourist period, and like the long rains, gorilla trekking is still excellent. Accommodation is at its cheapest, and you'll have Volcanoes National Park almost to yourself.

Month-by-Month Rwanda Safari Guide

January ????? β€” Short Dry Season

Excellent conditions for gorilla trekking and Akagera safari. Mild and dry. Good permit availability compared to peak season. An ideal time for a Rwanda New Year safari.

February ????? β€” Transitional

Still largely dry and excellent for all Rwanda safari activities. Permit availability is reasonable. One of the best months for birdwatching in Nyungwe Forest as migratory species are present.

March ????? β€” Rains Begin

Rains begin in late March. Gorilla trekking is still very good. Lodge rates start to drop. Not ideal for Akagera game drives.

April ????? β€” Wettest Month

Rwanda's wettest month. Trails are muddy. Gorilla trekking is still operational and rewarding. Deep discounts on accommodation. Best time for photographing Rwanda's famous thousand hills in rolling cloud.

May ????? β€” Rains Ease

Rains ease toward the end of May. Very few tourists. Excellent permit availability. Lush, green Rwanda at its most photogenic.

June ????? β€” Peak Season Begins

The long dry season begins and Rwanda explodes with tourists. Gorilla trekking conditions are superb. Akagera comes alive with predator activity. Book permits and lodges months in advance.

July ????? β€” Peak Month

The best month to visit Rwanda. Dry, clear, perfect for gorilla trekking and Akagera game drives. Fully booked months ahead.

August ????? β€” Peak Month

Equally as good as July. European summer holidays mean high demand. Golden morning light in Volcanoes National Park is extraordinary for photography.

September ????? β€” Late Peak

Conditions remain excellent as the dry season winds down. Slightly easier to get permits than July and August. Good birdwatching season.

October ????? β€” Short Rains

Short rains return. Gorilla trekking is fine. Akagera is quieter. Budget-friendly rates across Rwanda's lodges.

November ????? β€” Quietest Month

Rwanda's quietest month. Excellent value for budget travelers. Gorilla trekking continues daily. Beautiful green landscapes.

December ????? β€” Short Dry Season

The short dry season returns mid-December. Christmas and New Year Rwanda safaris are extremely popular. Book very early. Excellent conditions for all Rwanda safari activities.

Best Time for Specific Rwanda Safari Activities

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

The best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is during the dry seasons: June–September and December–January. Trails are drier, and the experience of trekking through sun-dappled bamboo forest is magical. However, gorilla trekking in the rainy season is equally special for different reasons β€” misty, atmospheric, and far less crowded.

Best Time for Akagera National Park Safari

The best time for an Akagera Big Five safari is during the long dry season (June–September). Wildlife concentrates around Lake Ihema and other water sources, lion sightings are most reliable, and all-day game drives are comfortable in the dry heat.

Best Time for Nyungwe Forest and Chimpanzee Trekking

Nyungwe Forest can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons offer easier trekking on Nyungwe's steep trails. The rainy season brings spectacular waterfalls and spectacular bird diversity β€” over 300 bird species have been recorded in Nyungwe, including the rare Albertine rift endemics.

Best Time for Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is beautiful year-round. The dry season offers calmer waters for boat excursions and kayaking. The rainy season brings dramatic stormy skies over the lake β€” stunning for photography.

When Should YOU Visit Rwanda?

Our recommendation at Rwanda Safari Tours: if you have the flexibility, visit in late June, late September, or December. You get near-peak conditions without peak-season competition for permits and accommodation. If budget is your primary consideration, April and May offer the same gorilla trekking experience at dramatically lower accommodation costs.
