Both Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga) host the same species: Gorilla beringei beringei, the mountain gorilla. The rules are identical: max 8 visitors per gorilla family, 1 hour maximum contact time, no flash photography, 7-metre minimum distance. What differs is cost, logistics, and what else you can do in the same trip.

This is the biggest number in the comparison and deserves a direct answer:

• Rwanda RDB gorilla permit: $1,500 per person (2026, no change from 2024-2025)
• Uganda UWA gorilla permit: $700 per person (2026)

Uganda is $800 cheaper per person. For a couple, that is $1,600 saved on permits alone. This is real money. Anyone telling you the price difference does not matter is not being honest with you.

1. Kigali Airport to Volcanoes NP: 2.5 hours

Kigali to Kinigi (Volcanoes NP headquarters) is 120km on good tarmac road — about 2.5 hours. You can fly in, sleep in Kigali, and do a gorilla trek the next day. Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — Uganda's main gorilla trekking park — is 480km and 8-10 hours by road, or requires a domestic flight to Kihihi/Kisoro. If your international connection is in Kigali, choosing Uganda means an extra domestic journey each way.

2. Rwanda's Other Wildlife is Better

After gorilla trekking in Rwanda, you have: Akagera National Park (Africa's most north-eastern Big Five park — lions reintroduced 2015, rhinos reintroduced 2017, both thriving), Nyungwe Forest (chimpanzees, 13 primate species, highest canopy walk in Africa), and Lake Kivu. Uganda's equivalent attractions — Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kibale chimps — require much longer drives and additional domestic travel.

3. Road Infrastructure and Safety

Rwanda has the best roads in East Africa outside South Africa. The Kigali-Musanze road is fully tarmacked. Bwindi in Uganda involves significant unpaved mountain road driving. Rwanda also consistently ranks as the safest country in Africa in multiple security indices.

4. Trek Quality Comparison

Volcanoes National Park has 12 habituated gorilla families (96 permits/day). Bwindi has 22+ habituated groups across 4 sectors. Both offer high-quality trekking. Bwindi's forest is denser and arguably wilder; Volcanoes NP treks tend to be somewhat shorter (1-4 hours vs 1-6 hours in Bwindi). Neither is definitively "better" as a gorilla sighting experience.

5. Permit Availability

Rwanda: 96 permits/day (peak season sells out 3-6 months ahead). Uganda: more permits available across more families, slightly easier to book last-minute. If your dates are flexible, Uganda offers more scheduling flexibility.

• Your international flight goes to Entebbe, not Kigali, and routing via Rwanda would add significant cost
• You want to combine gorilla trekking with a Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth game drive, which are not easily accessible from Rwanda

If you are flying into Kigali and have 5-7 days: Rwanda. If you are flying into Entebbe and are on a budget or want a longer Uganda circuit: Uganda. The gorilla experience itself is comparable — the decision comes down to logistics and what else you want to see.
