Wildlife Safari
Big Five Game Drives + Lake Ihema Boat Safari — From $800/Person
A 2-day Akagera safari is Rwanda's ultimate wildlife weekend — two full days in Africa's most accessible Big Five national park, with an overnight that lets you experience the golden-hour sunset and the prime predator hours of dawn. At $800 per person including accommodation, meals, a Lake Ihema boat safari and park fees, this is exceptional value for a Big Five safari from Kigali.
Depart Kigali at 6:00 am, arriving at Akagera's northern gate by 8:30 am. Your first Akagera game drive explores the central and northern sectors — wide open plains where lion prides rest on rocky kopjes and elephant herds gather around waterholes. Afternoon: the Lake Ihema boat safari — gliding past pods of 50–100 hippos, massive Nile crocodiles, and hundreds of water birds including the iconic shoebill stork. Overnight at your park lodge.
Before sunrise — the single best time in Akagera for wildlife. Lions returning from night hunts, rhinos at misty morning waterholes, leopards caught in the open. Your second Big Five game drive covers the southern sector where rhinos are most consistently found. Final bush breakfast, then return to Kigali by 16:00.
Lake Ihema holds one of the highest hippo densities in East Africa — pods of 50–100 individuals at close range. The 1.5-hour boat safari is fully included and consistently rated by guests as the highlight of any Akagera visit. The contrast between morning game drive and afternoon waterscape makes the 2-day format far superior to a single day.
Our 2-day guests achieve Big Five sightings on over 85% of dry-season visits. Elephants, buffaloes and hippos are guaranteed. Lions are spotted on more than 90% of 2-day visits. Rhinos are regularly found in the southern circuit on Day 2. Three days improves odds further — but two days delivers the complete Akagera experience at $800 per person.
