About This Tour

Rwanda is a top-tier African birding destination, hosting over 700 recorded bird species across three distinct and dramatically different ecosystems — making it exceptional value for serious birders who want maximum diversity in minimum time.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is the crown jewel of Rwandan birding: one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests, home to 29 Albertine Rift endemics — birds found nowhere else on Earth. Species include the Albertine owlet, Grauer's warbler, Shelley's crimsonwing, red-collared mountain babbler and the giant hornbill.

Akagera National Park offers classic savannah and wetland birding: the critically rare shoebill stork, saddle-billed stork, grey crowned crane, African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher and abundant papyrus-specialist species across its lake circuit.

Volcanoes National Park adds montane forest species at high altitude, including the Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, Kivu ground thrush and mountain buzzard.

Rwanda SafariTours works with specialist birding guides who carry field guides, maintain species lists and have decades of site-specific knowledge. Custom single-day and multi-day birding itineraries are available for all experience levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rwanda has over 700 recorded bird species. Nyungwe Forest alone hosts 310 species including 29 Albertine Rift endemics. Akagera has 500+ species including the sought-after shoebill stork. Volcanoes NP adds high-altitude montane forest specialists.
The shoebill stork is most reliably found in Akagera National Park's papyrus swamps, particularly around Lake Ihema and the northern wetlands. Our specialist birding guides know the exact locations and timing. A boat safari significantly improves shoebill sighting chances.
Rwanda offers excellent year-round birding. The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) are actually ideal — migratory species are present, forest birds are most vocal and Nyungwe's endemic species are highly active. The dry seasons are better for Akagera wildlife and easier trail conditions.
Yes — our most popular combo is gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP + Nyungwe birding + Akagera safari over 5–7 days. This gives you Rwanda's full wildlife and birding spectrum in one trip. Contact us for a tailored itinerary.
