About This Tour

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is the world's greatest wildlife experience — but is it affordable? The $1,500 Rwanda gorilla permit is fixed and non-negotiable (set by Rwanda Development Board). However, the surrounding costs — transport, accommodation, guide and services — can be dramatically reduced with the right booking approach.

Rwanda SafariTours offers budget gorilla trekking packages that make this experience genuinely accessible. Our budget approach uses small group shared vehicles (4–8 travellers from Kigali), comfortable mid-range guesthouses near Volcanoes NP (from $50/night), and the same RDB-certified expert guides used on all our tours.

A 2-day budget gorilla trek from Kigali is the most popular: depart Kigali early morning Day 1 (2.5 hours to Volcanoes NP), check into guesthouse, briefing and dinner. Day 2: gorilla trek (7 AM start, 2–6 hours in the field), 1 hour with gorillas, return to Kigali or add extra activities.

The gorilla experience itself — the 1 hour in the forest with a wild gorilla family — is identical regardless of your budget. Budget travellers spend the same magical hour with the same gorillas as luxury lodge guests paying 3× as much. That's what makes Rwanda gorilla trekking such exceptional value even at its most affordable.

Important: the $1,500 permit is included in our listed price. We never advertise a misleadingly low price that excludes the permit cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Rwanda gorilla permit is fixed at $1,500 — you cannot pay less for the permit itself. The savings come from using shared transport from Kigali (vs private vehicle), staying in mid-range guesthouses near the park (vs luxury lodges), and booking via a local Rwanda operator like Rwanda SafariTours (vs large international agents with high markups). Our 2-day budget package starts from $1,700/person including the permit.
Uganda gorilla permits cost $800 (vs Rwanda's $1,500), but Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is more remote and requires more travel time. The trek experience is very similar. If permit cost is the main concern, Uganda can be more economical. However, Rwanda's infrastructure, safety and lodge quality are generally superior. We can advise on both destinations.
Realistic budget for 2 days: $1,500 (permit) + $100–150 (shared transport) + $50–80 (guesthouse, 1 night) + $20–30 (meals) + $30 (guide gratuity, recommended) = approximately $1,700–1,800 total. Our package at $1,700 includes all the above except meals and gratuities.
Yes — entirely. The gorilla encounter is identical: same gorilla families, same 1-hour rule, same RDB guides. The difference is your pre-and-post accommodation and transport comfort. Many experienced safari-goers choose budget gorilla treks in Rwanda and spend their remaining budget on other destinations or activities.
