About This Tour

Rwanda is one of the very best African safari destinations for families — and it's significantly underrated for this audience. The country is compact (3–4 hours between parks), exceptionally safe, has good family-friendly lodges and offers wildlife activities that cater to every age group.

Akagera National Park is the anchor of any Rwanda family safari: Big Five game drives accessible to children of any age, boat safaris on Lake Ihema (excellent for families), and the excitement of tracking lions, elephants, zebras, hippos and giraffes. Akagera's lodges (Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Akagera Game Lodge) welcome families and offer excellent family rooms and activities.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is open to visitors aged 15 and above. For families with teenagers, the gorilla trek is a life-defining experience they will talk about for decades. Children under 15 can enjoy golden monkey tracking ($100 permit — no age restriction), volcano hikes and Dian Fossey Trail which has no age limit.

Lake Kivu adds beach and water activities to the family itinerary: swimming, kayaking, boat trips to islands and relaxed lakeside stays that let the whole family unwind after active safari days. Kigali offers excellent family-friendly restaurants, the Genocide Memorial (appropriate for ages 12+) and vibrant local markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years old — set by Rwanda Development Board. This is strictly enforced at Kinigi HQ. Children under 15 have excellent alternatives: golden monkey tracking (no age restriction), volcano hikes, Dian Fossey trail and Akagera NP game drives.
Rwanda is widely regarded as one of Africa's safest countries and an excellent destination for family travel. Kigali is consistently rated among Africa's safest and cleanest cities. The tourist infrastructure is well-developed, roads are good and there are no significant health risks beyond standard malaria precautions.
Near Volcanoes NP: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (spacious family rooms, good kids facilities). Akagera NP: Akagera Game Lodge (pool, family rooms, range of activities). Lake Kivu: Cormoran Lodge or Bethanie Lodge (safe swimming areas, water activities). We advise on family-suitable options at every budget level.
A comprehensive family Rwanda safari covers Kigali (1 night), Akagera (2 nights), Volcanoes NP (2 nights) and Lake Kivu (1–2 nights) — totalling 6–7 nights. This is achievable without rushed driving as the distances between parks are relatively short. A 5-night version (Kigali, Akagera, Volcanoes NP) is also popular.
