The centrepiece of Kigali's art scene is Inema Arts Centre — a vibrant studio and gallery space founded by brothers Emmanuel Nkuranga and Innocent Nkurunziza. Inema showcases contemporary Rwandan art, hosts regular exhibitions and runs art workshops. Visiting Inema — with a chance to meet artists at work and purchase directly from creators — is one of Kigali's most memorable cultural experiences.

Rwanda has its own unique visual art traditions: imigongo (geometric black-and-white art made from cow dung mixed with ash — originating in Kirehe district in eastern Rwanda) and agaseke (tightly coiled peace baskets of extraordinary craftsmanship).
