About This Tour
Kigali has quietly emerged as one of Africa's most exciting cities for art and culture — a creative renaissance driven by Rwanda's remarkable stability, growing educated middle class and the government's strong support for cultural development. A Kigali art and culture tour reveals this side of the city that many safari visitors miss entirely.
The centrepiece of Kigali's art scene is Inema Arts Centre — a vibrant studio and gallery space founded by brothers Emmanuel Nkuranga and Innocent Nkurunziza. Inema showcases contemporary Rwandan art, hosts regular exhibitions and runs art workshops. Visiting Inema — with a chance to meet artists at work and purchase directly from creators — is one of Kigali's most memorable cultural experiences.
Rwanda has its own unique visual art traditions: imigongo (geometric black-and-white art made from cow dung mixed with ash — originating in Kirehe district in eastern Rwanda) and agaseke (tightly coiled peace baskets of extraordinary craftsmanship). Our culture tour visits artisan workshops where you can watch these traditions being practiced and optionally participate in a hands-on session.
The full-day version of our Kigali culture tour adds a traditional Rwandan dance and drumming performance, a visit to the Natural History Museum and a dining experience at one of Kigali's outstanding restaurants celebrating Rwandan cuisine (isombe, brochettes, fresh juice and the excellent Rwandan coffee and tea). Kigali's dining scene has grown remarkably — farm-to-table restaurants serving locally-sourced Rwandan ingredients alongside global cuisine.
