About This Tour

Mount Karisimbi — Rwanda's Highest Peak

Mount Karisimbi is the tallest of the Virunga volcanoes at 4,507m, towering nearly 800m above Mount Bisoke. Unlike Bisoke, which can be climbed in a single day, Karisimbi is a genuine two-day mountain expedition — the distance and altitude make a one-day round trip impractical and unsafe. Every serious operator runs this as a 2-day/1-night trek with an overnight camp partway up the mountain, and we do too.

What's Included — $1,000 Per Person

The RDB Karisimbi hiking permit, a porter, all meals for both days, overnight camping equipment (tent and sleeping gear — temperatures at camp regularly drop below freezing), private 4x4 transport from Kigali, and your RDB ranger guide throughout.

Day 1 — Ascent to Camp

Early pickup from Kigali and the drive to Kinigi park headquarters for briefing. The first day's climb takes roughly 4-7 hours through bamboo forest and increasingly alpine terrain to reach the overnight camp at around 3,700m. Dinner and an early night at camp — it gets genuinely cold, so warm layers are essential.

Day 2 — Summit and Descent

An early start for the final push to the 4,507m summit, weather permitting. On clear days the view extends across the entire Virunga range — Bisoke, Mikeno, Sabyinyo and beyond. After time at the top, the full descent back to Kinigi follows, then private transport back to Kigali, arriving in the evening.

How Hard Is This?

Rated strenuous — this is genuinely demanding, with roughly 14-18 total hours of hiking across both days at high altitude. It's suited to experienced, fit hikers, not a casual add-on to a gorilla trek. If you're deciding between Karisimbi and Bisoke, Bisoke (a single day, moderate-to-strenuous) is the more accessible choice for most travelers.

Best Time to Go

June-September and December-February offer the driest trails and best summit visibility. Outside these windows, cloud cover often obscures the view from the top, though the trek still runs.

Not on the same days — Karisimbi needs two full consecutive days. Many travelers do gorilla trekking either before or after this trek, with a rest day in between given how demanding both activities are.
