Uganda Travel Guide 2026

Gorilla trekking, Big Five safaris and chimpanzee tracking — Uganda's parks, costs, and how it compares to neighboring Rwanda.

Why Uganda

Uganda is the other half of the mountain gorilla story — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest holds roughly 40% of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, alongside Rwanda's Virunga population. Uganda also offers genuinely diverse wildlife in one country: tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Nile and its falls at Murchison Falls, and chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest.

Uganda's Top National Parks

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Uganda's mountain gorilla trekking destination — dense, ancient rainforest with several habituated gorilla families spread across different sectors of the park.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Known for tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector, Kazinga Channel boat safaris, and exceptional bird diversity.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda's largest park, centered on the dramatic point where the Nile forces itself through a narrow gorge — strong Big Five game viewing plus the falls themselves.

Kibale Forest

The best chimpanzee tracking in East Africa, with a very high success rate and the option of a full-day chimp habituation experience.

Gorilla Trekking: Uganda vs. Rwanda

Uganda's gorilla permit costs $800 per person, compared to Rwanda's $1,500 — a significant difference. The trade-off is logistics: Bwindi is further from Kampala and roads in are rougher than the short, paved drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park. If budget is the main factor, Uganda is considerably cheaper for the same core experience. If you want the shortest, smoothest trip with a more developed luxury lodge scene, Rwanda has the edge. Many travelers combine both. Compare with Rwanda gorilla trekking.

Best Time to Visit Uganda

Uganda's dry seasons — June–August and December–February — are best for gorilla and chimp trekking. The rest of the year is wetter but still workable, since forest trekking happens year-round regardless of season.

How Many Days Do You Need?

A dedicated gorilla trek needs at least 3–4 days given Bwindi's distance from Kampala. Combining gorillas with Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls realistically needs 7–10 days.

Visa and Entry

Uganda is part of the East Africa Tourist Visa alongside Rwanda and Kenya — one visa covers single-entry travel across all three, useful if you're combining a Uganda gorilla trek with a Rwanda or Kenya safari.
