About This Tour

Mount Bisoke is one of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga range towering above Musanze, and one of only two in Rwanda that can be climbed by visitors (alongside Mount Karisimbi). The hike climbs roughly 2,500m in elevation through bamboo forest and Hagenia woodland before reaching the crater rim — where a still, green crater lake sits inside the summit, often wrapped in cloud.

The round-trip hike covers about 12km and takes approximately 6 hours (2.5-4 hours up, 1.5-2 hours down), starting and ending at Kinigi park headquarters — the same starting point as gorilla trekking. It's a genuinely different experience from gorilla trekking: less about wildlife, more about the climb itself and the view from the top, with the crater lake and, on clear days, views across to Karisimbi, Mikeno and the other Virunga peaks.

Our day-trip package includes private transport from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park and back, the RDB hiking permit and porter fee, and lunch. A porter is genuinely worth hiring for this hike — the trail is steeper and longer than gorilla trekking, and porters (often from the local community) carry your daypack and help on the steeper sections.

    Private pickup from your Kigali hotel. Scenic 2.5-hour drive north to Musanze and Kinigi park headquarters.

    Briefing at Kinigi
    Register at Kinigi park headquarters, meet your ranger guide and porter, and get a safety briefing before setting off.

    The Climb
    Hike through farmland, bamboo forest and Hagenia woodland as the trail steepens toward the crater rim. Allow 2.5-4 hours to the top depending on pace and conditions.

    Bisoke Crater Lake
