Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: The Complete 2025 Guide
There are experiences that change you forever. Standing face-to-face with a wild mountain gorilla in the mist-soaked forests of Volcanoes National Park is one of them. Rwanda is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and a gorilla trekking permit here is your golden ticket to one of the most intimate wildlife encounters on the planet. At Rwanda Safari Tours, we have been helping travellers make this dream a reality for years — and this guide is everything we wish every client knew before they arrived.
Why Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking is also possible in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, but Rwanda has become the gold standard for several compelling reasons. Volcanoes National Park is only two hours from Kigali International Airport, making it one of the most accessible gorilla destinations in the world. Rwanda's infrastructure is excellent — clean roads, superb lodges, and a government that takes conservation seriously. Gorilla permit revenue directly funds community projects in the surrounding villages, meaning your visit does genuine good.
Rwanda currently has more than 12 habituated gorilla families open to visitors, each with its own personality. Families like Susa, Amahoro, and Kwitonda offer different trekking terrains and group dynamics, so no two experiences are alike.
Gorilla Permit Cost and How to Book
A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs USD 1,500 per person. This entitles you to one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Permits sell out months in advance during peak season (June–September and December–February), so we strongly recommend booking at least three to six months ahead. Rwanda Safari Tours can secure your permit as part of a complete package that includes accommodation, airport transfers, and a private guide.
What to Expect on Trek Day
Your day begins with a pre-trek briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi at 7 AM. Rangers assign you to a gorilla family based on fitness level, and your group — a maximum of eight visitors — sets off into the bamboo forest with armed escorts and expert trackers. Treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. When you find them, you will have exactly 60 minutes in their company. That hour passes in what feels like seconds.

What to Wear and Pack
- Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
- Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers (protects against nettles and insects)
- Light waterproof jacket
- Gardening-style gloves for grabbing vegetation on steep slopes
- Small daypack with 2 litres of water, snacks, and a camera
- Insect repellent (apply before entering the forest)
Best Time to Go
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the most comfortable conditions. Trails are drier, and the gorillas tend to stay lower on the mountain slopes where they are easier to reach. The wet seasons bring lush green scenery and fewer crowds, which appeals to photographers seeking dramatic forest shots.
