What to Expect on Trek Day
Your day begins with a pre-trek briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi at 7 AM. Rangers assign you to a gorilla family based on fitness level, and your group — a maximum of eight visitors — sets off into the bamboo forest with armed escorts and expert trackers. Treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. When you find them, you will have exactly 60 minutes in their company. That hour passes in what feels like seconds.

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the most comfortable conditions. Trails are drier, and the gorillas tend to stay lower on the mountain slopes where they are easier to reach.
