About This Tour

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is the world's greatest wildlife experience — but is it affordable? The $1,500 Rwanda gorilla permit is fixed and non-negotiable (set by Rwanda Development Board). However, the cost around it — transport and guide services — can be reduced with the right booking approach.

Rwanda Safari Tours offers this budget gorilla trekking day trip using a shared safari vehicle (other travelers heading to the same park that morning, carefully coordinated on timing) instead of a private 4×4, with the same RDB-certified expert guides used on all our tours. It's a single day from Kigali and back — no overnight stay required.

The gorilla experience itself — the 1 hour in the forest with a wild gorilla family — is identical regardless of your budget. Budget travellers spend the same magical hour with the same gorillas as private-tour guests paying more. That's what makes this such exceptional value even at its most affordable.

Important: the $1,500 permit and lunch are both included in our listed price. We never advertise a misleadingly low price that excludes the permit cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Rwanda gorilla permit is fixed at $1,500 — you cannot pay less for the permit itself. The savings come from using a shared safari vehicle from Kigali instead of a private 4x4, and booking via a local Rwanda operator like Rwanda Safari Tours instead of a large international agent with a markup. This day trip starts from $1,750/person including the permit and lunch.
Uganda gorilla permits cost $800 (vs Rwanda's $1,500), but Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is more remote and requires more travel time. The trek experience is very similar. If permit cost is the main concern, Uganda can be more economical. However, Rwanda's infrastructure, safety and lodge quality are generally superior. We can advise on both destinations.
Realistic total for the day: $1,500 (permit) + $250 (shared vehicle, guide and lunch) = $1,750, which is exactly what this package costs. Add any guide gratuity you choose to give.
Yes — entirely. The gorilla encounter is identical: same gorilla families, same 1-hour rule, same RDB guides. The difference is shared vs private transport. Many travelers choose the budget day trip and spend the savings elsewhere on their trip.
Skipping accommodation is one of the simplest ways to cut real cost without touching the permit or the guide quality. If you'd rather stay overnight near the park, ask us and we'll quote accommodation separately.
