Rare Golden Monkeys in the Virunga Mountains
Golden monkeys are native to the Virunga Mountains, known for their bright orange-gold fur and found in the bamboo forest of Volcanoes National Park, about 130km (3 hours) from Kigali. Tracking them is a shorter, more affordable primate encounter than gorilla trekking β a genuinely good half-day activity on its own, or combined with a gorilla trek.
The $100 RDB golden monkey permit, a private 4x4 with driver-guide round-trip from Kigali, and bottled water. One all-in price.
Early pickup from Kigali, arriving at Kinigi headquarters for a 7:00am briefing. The trek itself runs 1-4 hours depending on where the monkeys are that morning, followed by about an hour observing the family β watching them move through the bamboo canopy and underbrush. Bring hiking boots, long sleeves, a waterproof jacket, and a camera.
The dry season (June-September) offers better trail conditions and visibility. The shoulder season (October-May) is quieter, with fewer other visitors in the park.
