Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: The Complete 2026 Guide

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on Earth. Coming face-to-face with a wild mountain gorilla in the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park is a moment that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Rwanda is home to more than half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population β€” roughly 600 individuals β€” and the country has built the most accessible, best-managed gorilla trekking program in Africa.

Whether you are planning your first Rwanda safari or looking to upgrade your gorilla trekking experience, this complete guide covers everything: Rwanda gorilla trekking permits, costs, gorilla families, what to expect on the trail, packing lists, and how to book your gorilla trekking tour with expert local guides.

Why Choose Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking?

Rwanda is consistently rated the best destination for gorilla trekking in Africa, and for very good reason:

  • Proximity to Kigali: Volcanoes National Park is just 2–3 hours from Kigali International Airport, making Rwanda the most accessible gorilla trekking destination in the world. Uganda and the DRC require far longer journeys.
  • Conservation success: Rwanda's gorilla population has grown significantly thanks to strict conservation by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Gorilla trekking permits directly fund this conservation work.
  • Safety and infrastructure: Rwanda is consistently ranked the safest country in Africa. Kigali is the cleanest capital on the continent. Roads to Volcanoes National Park are excellent and well-maintained.
  • High habituation rate: All 12 gorilla families open to tourism in Rwanda are fully habituated, meaning they are completely accustomed to human presence and will go about their natural behavior during your visit.
  • Premium experience: With only 8 visitors allowed per gorilla family per day, Rwanda offers a premium, uncrowded gorilla trekking experience that is unmatched anywhere.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permits: Everything You Need to Know

A Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 1,500 per person as of 2025. This fee is set by the Rwanda Development Board and includes your park entry, ranger guides, and the one-hour gorilla trekking experience.

The permit price increased from USD 1,500 in 2024 and is expected to remain at this level through 2025 and 2026. Rwanda gorilla permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. They must be purchased for a specific date and a specific gorilla family.

How to Secure a Rwanda Gorilla Permit

Permits can be purchased directly through the Rwanda Development Board website or β€” more conveniently β€” through a licensed Rwanda safari tour operator like Rwanda Safari Tours. Booking through a reputable tour operator has several key advantages:

  • We handle all permit logistics on your behalf
  • We advise on the best gorilla families for your fitness level
  • We combine your gorilla trek with accommodation, transport, and other Rwanda experiences
  • We can sometimes access permits even during peak season when individual bookings are sold out

Book gorilla trekking permits as early as possible. Peak season permits (June–September and December–January) sell out 6–12 months in advance. Low season permits are easier to get, but we still recommend booking at least 3 months ahead.

The 12 Gorilla Families in Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is home to 12 gorilla families that are habituated for tourism. Each family has a distinct personality, size, and trekking difficulty level. Here are some of the most popular gorilla families:

Susa Group

The largest and most famous gorilla family in Rwanda, the Susa Group was once studied by the legendary Dian Fossey. With up to 28 members, this is one of the largest gorilla families in the world. Trekking to the Susa Group is considered the most challenging β€” treks can take 5–8 hours β€” but the reward of seeing a family this large is extraordinary.

Amahoro Group

The name means "peace" in Kinyarwanda, and this family lives up to it. The Amahoro Group is one of the most relaxed and peaceful gorilla families, making it excellent for photographers and first-time gorilla trekkers. They typically reside at higher altitudes, so the trek can be long, but the scenery is spectacular.

Agashya Group (Group 13)

This mid-sized gorilla family of around 25 members is led by a powerful silverback named Agashya. They are known for their accessibility and a moderate trekking difficulty, making them one of the most popular families for tourists. Treks typically take 2–4 hours.

Sabyinyo Group

The Sabyinyo Group is one of the easiest families to reach, with treks often as short as 30 minutes to 2 hours. This is the recommended family for elderly visitors, those with limited fitness, or anyone who prefers a less strenuous gorilla trek in Rwanda.

Kwitonda Group

A large family of around 20 members, the Kwitonda Group is one of the most fascinating β€” the family migrated from the DRC and settled permanently in Rwanda. Trekking difficulty is moderate to challenging, and the treks can take 3–6 hours.

What to Expect on Your Rwanda Gorilla Trek

Your gorilla trekking day in Rwanda will follow a clear structure. Here is exactly what to expect:

Morning Briefing at Park HQ

All gorilla trekking groups gather at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for a 7:00 AM briefing. Park rangers will explain gorilla trekking rules, introduce your guide, and assign your gorilla family based on your fitness level and preference.

The Trek

After the briefing, you'll drive to the trailhead closest to your assigned gorilla family. The trek begins through farmland at the forest edge before entering the dense bamboo and Hagenia forest. Trails range from relatively flat to steep volcanic hillside terrain depending on your gorilla family. The average trek duration is 2–5 hours, though this varies greatly depending on where the gorillas have moved since the previous day.

The One-Hour Visit

Once you locate the gorilla family, you have exactly one hour to spend with them. This is strictly enforced to minimize human impact on the gorillas. During this time, the gorillas will behave completely naturally β€” silverbacks will beat their chests and display dominance, mothers will nurse their babies, juveniles will play and tumble through the undergrowth. You will be close enough to look into their eyes and feel their breath. It is, without question, one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth.

Gorilla Trekking Rules to Follow

  • Maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters from the gorillas at all times
  • Never eat or drink in the presence of gorillas
  • Do not use flash photography β€” it disturbs the gorillas
  • Do not make sudden movements or loud sounds
  • If a silverback charges, crouch down, look away, and do not run
  • Anyone showing symptoms of illness (cold, flu, COVID) will not be permitted to trek
  • Children under 15 years old are not permitted on gorilla treks

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

The right gear makes a significant difference to your gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda. Here is our expert packing list:

  • Waterproof hiking boots: Essential. The forest floor is muddy and uneven. Ankle support is critical.
  • Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers: Protects against stinging nettles, insects, and the cool forest temperatures.
  • Lightweight rain jacket: Volcanoes National Park is a rainforest β€” rain can arrive at any time.
  • Garden gloves: For gripping vegetation on steep terrain and protecting your hands from nettles.
  • Insect repellent: Apply before entering the forest.
  • Sunscreen: Above the forest canopy at high altitude, UV exposure is intense.
  • Camera with zoom lens: A 200mm–400mm zoom lens is ideal. No flash permitted.
  • Water (2 litres minimum) and snacks: Energy bars and trail mix are perfect.
  • Walking stick: Available for hire at the park gate. Highly recommended for steep sections.
  • Porter: Also available at the park gate. Porters carry your bag and assist you on steep terrain. They provide invaluable local employment β€” always hire one.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is possible year-round, but the best conditions are during the two dry seasons:

  • June to September: The long dry season. This is peak gorilla trekking season in Rwanda. Trails are drier, views are clearer, and trekking conditions are at their best. This is also the best time to combine your gorilla trek with an Akagera Big Five safari.
  • December to January: The short dry season. Also excellent conditions for gorilla trekking, and permits are slightly easier to obtain than peak season.

The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) are excellent for budget-conscious gorilla trekkers. Permits are the same price, but accommodation rates drop significantly. The forests are lush and dramatically green during the rains. The gorillas are easier to find because they tend to stay at lower altitudes where food is more abundant. Trails are muddier but the experience is equally rewarding.
