Why Rwanda Is Africa's Most Romantic Safari Destination
Every safari destination offers wildlife. Rwanda offers that plus something rarer: genuine intimacy. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is limited to 8 people per family group. When you book a private gorilla trek as a couple, those 8 slots can be just the two of you — a truly private hour with mountain gorillas in ancient volcanic forest. That experience does not exist anywhere else.
Rwanda also has Lake Kivu — one of Africa's Great Lakes, with island lodges built over the water, and sunset boat cruises that end with fruit bats emerging at dusk in their thousands. And Kigali, surprisingly, is one of East Africa's most cosmopolitan cities with excellent restaurants and luxury boutique hotels.
The Ideal Rwanda Honeymoon Safari Itinerary
Day 1-2: Kigali
Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Most honeymooners stay at the Kigali Serena Hotel or Retreat by Heaven — both excellent, with beautiful garden settings. Day 1 afternoon: Inema Arts Centre (Rwanda's most vibrant contemporary art gallery) and Kigali's hillside viewpoints. Evening: dinner at Repub Lounge or Heaven Restaurant overlooking the city lights. Day 2: Kigali Genocide Memorial in the morning (essential for understanding Rwanda's story) and the afternoon at Kimironko Market for local crafts and Rwanda's extraordinary woven baskets.
Day 3-4: Lake Kivu
Drive to Rubavu (formerly Gisenyi) on Lake Kivu — 3 hours from Kigali. Check in at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel or Cormoran Lodge, both with rooms directly over the water. Afternoon: private sunset boat cruise on Lake Kivu to Napoleon Island. At dusk, 70,000+ Nile straw-coloured fruit bats emerge from the island forest and fill the sky — one of Rwanda's most spectacular and least-photographed wildlife moments. Sundowners on the water as the bats spiral overhead. Evening: lakeside dinner. Day 4: morning coffee watching fishing boats cross the Congo border mid-lake. Afternoon at leisure or kayaking on the lake.
Day 5: Lake Kivu to Volcanoes NP
Morning drive from Rubavu to Musanze (1.5 hours through terraced hillsides). Check in at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park. Afternoon: optional golden monkey tracking ($100 per person) — a warm-up primate experience that prepares you for gorilla day. Evening: candlelit dinner at the lodge with Bisoke volcano silhouette at sunset.
Day 6: Private Gorilla Trek
The honeymoon centrepiece. 5:30am: your Rwanda SafariTours guide picks you up. 8:00am: Kinigi headquarters briefing. The gorilla trek begins. Once you reach the family — a silverback, females, and infants going about their morning in the bamboo forest — you have 1 hour that neither of you will forget. People cry. Not from sadness — from the overwhelming realisation of what you are witnessing. A private gorilla trek (just the two of you) is $1,700 per person ($1,500 RDB permit + $200 Rwanda SafariTours service fee).
After the trek: champagne (bring a small bottle from Kigali, hidden in your daypack) at the lodge, celebrate over lunch. Afternoon rest. Evening: sunset views from your lodge terrace toward the Virunga volcanoes.
Day 7: Return Kigali, Departure
Morning at leisure near Volcanoes NP — optional Musanze caves visit or local market. Drive back to Kigali (2.5 hours). Departure from Kigali International Airport. Most evening international flights depart between 6pm and midnight — there is typically time for a final Kigali lunch before the airport.
