Volcanoes National Park Rwanda: Complete Visitor Guide 2025

Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) in northwestern Rwanda is one of the most iconic national parks in Africa. Set in the Virunga Mountains along the triple border of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Volcanoes National Park is home to the world's most critically endangered great ape: the mountain gorilla.

The park protects the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Conservation Area β€” a chain of six extinct and three active volcanoes rising to 4,507 metres above sea level at the summit of Mount Karisimbi. Dense bamboo forests, Hagenia woodland, and open montane moorland provide habitat for mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, spotted hyenas, black-fronted duikers, and over 180 bird species.

Volcanoes National Park is most famous as the site of Dian Fossey's Karisoke Research Centre β€” the legendary American primatologist who dedicated her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas and whose story was immortalised in the film Gorillas in the Mist.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla trekking is the centrepiece experience in Volcanoes National Park and the primary reason most visitors come to Rwanda. The park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families open to tourism, with a maximum of 8 visitors per family per day. The mountain gorilla trekking permit costs USD 1,500 per person.

All gorilla treks begin with a briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi at 7:00 AM. Groups are then assigned to their gorilla family and driven to the trailhead. Trek duration varies from 30 minutes (Sabyinyo family, easy) to 8 hours (Susa family, very challenging), depending on where the gorillas have moved since the previous day.

For a complete gorilla trekking guide including permit booking, gorilla family descriptions, what to pack, and rules for the visit, see our full Rwanda gorilla trekking guide.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Golden monkey trekking is the second major primate experience in Volcanoes National Park and is dramatically underrated. The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is a critically endangered primate found only in the Virunga mountains β€” its vivid golden-orange back and playful, chaotic energy make it one of the most delightful primates to encounter in Rwanda.

Golden monkey trekking permits cost USD 100 per person and follow a similar format to gorilla trekking β€” morning briefing, guided forest trek, one-hour visit with the habituated golden monkey community. The golden monkey experience is generally easier and shorter than gorilla trekking, with groups typically located in the lower-altitude bamboo zones within 1–2 hours of the trailhead.

The best combination is to trek golden monkeys on day one of your Volcanoes National Park visit and mountain gorillas on day two. This way you experience both of the park's iconic primate encounters.

The Dian Fossey Tomb Hike

One of the most moving and historically significant experiences in Rwanda, the Dian Fossey tomb hike takes you to the former site of the Karisoke Research Centre at 3,000 metres in the saddle area between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. Here, Dian Fossey lived, worked, and ultimately died in 1985 β€” murdered in her cabin in circumstances that remain officially unsolved.

The hike to Karisoke takes approximately 2 hours each way on a steep, forested trail. At the top, you visit the ruins of Fossey's research camp, the graves of the gorillas she studied and loved β€” including the famous silverback Digit β€” and Fossey's own grave, alongside Digit and other gorillas she spent her life protecting.

The Dian Fossey hike costs USD 75 per person and must be booked in advance. Our guides provide extensive context about Fossey's life and legacy throughout the hike. This is a deeply emotional experience β€” bring tissues.

Volcano Hiking in Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park offers several challenging volcano hiking experiences for visitors who want to explore the high-altitude wilderness beyond the gorilla trails:

Mount Bisoke (3,711m)

The most popular volcano hike in Volcanoes National Park, Mount Bisoke is a 3,711-metre dormant volcano with a beautiful crater lake at its summit. The hike takes 6–8 hours return and is considered moderately challenging. Summit views across the Virunga chain and into the DRC are spectacular. Hiking permit: USD 75 per person.

Mount Karisimbi (4,507m)

The highest peak in the Virunga chain, Mount Karisimbi is a 2-day summit expedition reaching 4,507 metres. The hike involves camping at 3,700 metres on night one and summit attempt on day two. Conditions at the summit are cold, windy, and often wet. Excellent fitness is required. Permit and guide: USD 400 per person (2 days). An extraordinary achievement and one of the best hikes in East Africa.

Mount Sabyinyo (3,645m)

The dramatic peak of Mount Sabyinyo straddles the triple border of Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. At the summit, you can stand with one foot in each country. The hike is 6–8 hours return and considered moderately challenging. Permit: USD 75 per person.

Mount Muhavura (4,127m)

A challenging 8–10 hour return hike to a summit at 4,127 metres. Excellent fitness required. Permit: USD 75 per person.
