Why Rwanda

Rwanda is small, safe and genuinely easy to travel in — you can see mountain gorillas, Big Five savannah wildlife, and rainforest chimpanzees inside one country, often within the same week, connected by good roads and short drive times. It's also the cleanest, most orderly country in East Africa, with a capital (Kigali) regularly ranked among Africa's safest cities.

Rwanda's National Parks and Top Destinations

Volcanoes National Park

Home to Rwanda's mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, in the Virunga volcanic range near Musanze. The main reason most people visit Rwanda. See gorilla trekking tours.

Akagera National Park

Rwanda's only savannah reserve and the country's Big Five destination — lions and rhinos were both successfully reintroduced here. See Akagera safaris.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

One of Africa's oldest rainforests, home to chimpanzees, 13 primate species and a canopy walkway suspended above the forest. See Nyungwe tours.

Lake Kivu

One of Africa's great lakes, with a relaxed, scenic shoreline around Rubavu and Karongi — the natural place to slow down after trekking. See Lake Kivu tours.

Kigali

Rwanda's capital: the Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, a growing contemporary art scene, and some of the best food in the region. See Kigali city tours.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda is home to roughly 60% of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population. A permit costs a fixed $1,500 per person, set by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) — the same price everywhere, with no discount operators. Minimum age is 15. The trek itself takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorilla family is that day, followed by one hour in their presence.

Rwanda's gorilla trekking is more expensive than Uganda's ($800) but the trade-off is shorter, better-maintained access roads and a significantly more developed luxury lodge scene around Volcanoes National Park.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda

Rwanda has two dry seasons: June–September and December–February — the best windows for gorilla trekking, with drier trails and easier hiking. The two rainy seasons (March–May, October–November) bring fewer visitors and sometimes better lodge rates, and gorilla trekking still runs year-round.

How Many Days Do You Need?

A realistic minimum is 3 days (gorilla trekking plus a Kigali day). 5–7 days is the most popular range, adding Akagera and/or Lake Kivu. Serious wildlife travelers combining all of Rwanda's parks typically plan 9–11 days.

Visa and Entry

Most nationalities can get a Rwanda visa on arrival or via the simple online e-visa system. Rwanda is also part of the East Africa Tourist Visa, allowing single-entry travel between Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on one visa if you're combining countries.
