The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, the Great Migration and Kilimanjaro — Tanzania's parks, timing, and how to combine it with a Rwanda gorilla trek.
Tanzania has the classic safari landscape most people picture: the endless plains of the Serengeti, the wildlife-dense Ngorongoro Crater, and the annual Great Migration of roughly two million wildebeest and zebra. It also has Africa's highest peak, Kilimanjaro, and the beaches of Zanzibar for a post-safari stretch.
Tanzania's best-known park and the stage for most of the Great Migration — vast open plains with consistently high predator sightings.
A collapsed volcanic caldera holding an extraordinarily dense concentration of wildlife, including a genuine chance at all of the Big Five in a single day.
Tanzania's island escape — white-sand beaches, Stone Town's old-world architecture, and a natural add-on after a dust-and-game-drive safari.
Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest free-standing mountain — climbable without technical mountaineering experience over 5-9 days depending on route.
The migration moves in a rough annual circuit rather than staying in one place. Broadly: calving season is January–March in the southern Serengeti/Ndutu area; the famous Mara River crossings happen July–September in the northern Serengeti. Timing your trip to the right part of the Serengeti matters as much as timing the season.
The long dry season (June–October) is the most popular and reliable window for game viewing across the northern circuit. The short dry season (late December–February) is excellent for the Ndutu calving season specifically. The long rains (March–May) are quieter and cheaper, with lush scenery.
Tanzania's classic savanna safari and Rwanda's gorilla trekking are genuinely complementary — completely different landscapes and wildlife in the same region. We run a dedicated Rwanda & Tanzania luxury safari combining both, and a broader Rwanda, Kenya & Tanzania circuit for travelers wanting all three.
We're based in Rwanda and arrange combined Rwanda-Tanzania itineraries directly — no third-party markup in between.
